A Tale of Two Regions: Huehuetenango & Nuevo Oriente

Ah, Guatemala – a country that continues to fascinate and surprise us in the world of specialty coffee. Today, we're exploring an intriguing blend that marries two distinct regions: the legendary Huehuetenango and the up-and-coming Nuevo Oriente.

Huehuetenango, perched at dizzying altitudes of 1500 to 2000 meters above sea level, is a coffee lover's dream. Its unique microclimate, shaped by hot winds from Mexico's Tehuantepec plain, allows for cultivation at heights that would be impossible elsewhere. This extreme altitude, combined with the region's numerous rivers, creates the perfect conditions for producing exquisitely complex washed coffees.

Now, let's turn our attention to Nuevo Oriente. This lesser-known region is experiencing a coffee renaissance. Once dominated by smallholders, we're now seeing larger estates emerge, drawn by the promise of rich volcanic soils and ideal growing conditions. With an average rainfall of 1800-2000mm per year and temperatures ranging from 18-25°C, Nuevo Oriente is poised to become Guatemala's next coffee hotspot.

The Cup Profile

What happens when we combine these two distinct terroirs? The result is a fascinating study in complementary flavors. From Huehuetenango, expect vibrant citrus notes and that characteristic brightness we associate with high-altitude coffees. Nuevo Oriente brings depth to the cup with aromatic notes of cocoa powder, graham cracker, and roasted almonds.

Processing and Quality

This lot is classified as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB), grown above 1200 meters. At these elevations, the cherries develop more slowly, resulting in denser beans with more complex flavor compounds. The coffee has been meticulously sorted to European Preparation (EP) standards, ensuring consistency and quality in the cup.

The washed processing method used here allows the true character of these regions to shine through. It's a clean, crisp expression of Guatemala's diverse coffee landscape.

Final Thoughts

What's particularly exciting about this blend is how it showcases Guatemala's evolving coffee scene. We have the established excellence of Huehuetenango paired with the emerging potential of Nuevo Oriente. It's a snapshot of a country that continues to push boundaries in specialty coffee production.
